Crisis

CRISIS

Crisis is defined as a sudden event in one’s life that disturbs homeostasis, during which usual coping mechanisms cannot resolve the problem.

What’s a mental health crisis?

  • A mental health crisis is when you feel at breaking point, and you need urgent help
  • Feeling extremely anxious and having panic attacks or flashbacks, feeling suicidal, or self-harming
  • Having an episode of hypomania or mania, (feeling very high) or psychosis (maybe hearing voices, or feeling very paranoid).
  • Feeling very suicidal and having regular thoughts of taking your own life.

What is depression?

  • According to Mind (www.mind.org.uk)
  • Depression is a low that lasts for a long time and impacts on your everyday life
  • In mild depression, this can mean you feel low but it doesn’t stop you from leading your normal life – it just makes it more difficult
  • Severe depression can be life-threatening and lead to people feeling suicidal.

“It starts as sadness then I feel myself shutting down, becoming less capable of coping. Eventually, I just feel numb and empty”
