Signs of Distress

Certain signs of distress may be exhibited in the hours and days following an emergency or traumatic event.

Below are some common reactions:

Emotional Reactions Cognitive Reactions
Reactions connected to how a person is feeling, and how they perceive they are coping with a situation. A person may share feelings of: Reactions that connected to persons thoughts, ability to manage those. Reactions may include
Fear, Anxiety, Helplessness Impaired concentration or Impaired memory
Hopeless & Demotivation Intrusive thoughts
Guilt, Anger, Frustration Confusion or disorientation
Sadness, Loneliness Hypervigilance (being always on alert)
Dissociation (feeling disconnected from yourself or the world around you) or denial
