People with Additional Needs and Trauma

  • Like everybody, people with a learning disability, autistic people and people affected by dementia and other cognitive difference, will respond to and show distress differently from person to person. Do not assume that behaviour that is different to ‘normal’ is actually different for that individual – but also do not assume that this is just because of their cognitive difference.

  • Many people will be able to discuss how they are being affected and whether there has been any change to their thoughts, feelings or actions, Those close to the person may be able to help and people may be able to share information such as learning disability or autism passports or other records that set out how the person usually reacts and how to spot signs of distress or anxiety.
