How Do People Respond in Emergencies ?

Different people respond in different ways in an emergency or following a trauma.  They may:

    1. They may act in a totally rational manner
    2. They may panic
    3. They may  freeze with shock
    4. They, be calm and help others
    5. They may act selfishly
    6. They may respond chaotically

    • People are likely to show altruism in emergencies. While this is a great asset, it can also be a problem because people may expose themselves to danger while trying to help others.
    • People are more likely to panic if they feel trapped and helpless, if escaping seems to be the only way to survive or if there is no-one available to help. Even in these circumstances, panic is unlikely.
