Blue Light Research

  • Research shows that one in four of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year. (McManus, S., Meltzer, H., Brugha, T. S., Bebbington, P. E., & Jenkins, R. (2009). Adult psychiatric morbidity in England, 2007: results of a household survey.)
  • 9 out of 10 of those surveyed had experienced stress, low mood and poor mental health at some point whilst working for the emergency services.

    Our research also shows:

    • 44% thought colleagues would be treated differently (in a negative way) if they disclosed a mental health problem at work. This answer was the same if respondents had personal experience of mental health problems or not.
    • Blue light staff and volunteers were just as likely to seek help from a colleague as from their GP. 2/3 were most likely to seek support from family and friends.
