Advice to friends and family

  • Allow the survivor the space to talk if they wish to do so but do not push them to talk before they are ready.
  • Be aware that they may initially be irritable, angry, flat, lacking in concentration or hyper-alert.
  • Encourage the survivor to look after their physical health and keep to their usual routines as much as possible.
  • Be available in a non-judgmental, open manner. Let them know that this will improve with time.
